NXP: One in ten smartphones sold in 2011 included NFC

“We believe the year ended with the overall industry achieving about a 10% attach rate of NFC solutions to the 445m smartphones shipped in 2011, albeit below our original expectations of about a 16% attach rate,” the chip maker’s CEO has told analysts during an earnings call for its end of year financial results.

Salt Lake gears up for NFC summer

Isis, the mobile commerce joint venture between AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, is preparing to launch a massive NFC payments pilot in Salt Lake City this summer, reports the Salt Lake Tribune.

Smart Card Alliance releases NFC transit report

The Smart Card Alliance Transportation Council has published a white paper examining how the transit industry can best make use of NFC technology.

“One of the major challenges facing transit agencies today is how to capitalize on the ever-growing popularity of mobile phones with a solid mobile strategy,” said Transportation Council Chairman Craig Roberts. “This white paper builds on the knowledge base developed in earlier white papers to foster a greater understanding of NFC technology, explain its role in the transit industry, and shed light on key issues facing the transit industry in developing a mobile strategy.”

Google Wallet available on AT&T, Verizon

Exclusive to Sprint since its launch in 2011, Google Wallet is now being offered on Samsung Galaxy Nexus phones from AT&T and Verizon, according to BriefMobile.

Verizon had originally blocked Google Wallet on the Galaxy Nexus – presumably out of defense of its own NFC payments joint venture Isis with AT&T and T-Mobile. But now it appears the Isis folks have changed their mind, as the Android Market site is now telling AT&T and Verizon customers that Google Wallet is compatible with their Galaxy Nexus phones.
